Where were you arrested? A DUI is a state offense, but each jurisdiction handles them slightly differently.

Police look for impaired drivers at start of school year

With the new semester in full swing at Arizona State University, there are many parties and social gatherings that you may be looking forward to. With great fun, though, comes great responsibility. When you go out, make sure that you have a designated driver or that you have arranged a safe, reliable method of transportation to get you home without risking you a DUI.

Arizona's minimum BAC (blood alcohol content) of .08% means that for students over 21, if you have had anywhere between 3-6 drinks, you qualify for a DUI, depending on your weight. For anyone under the age of 21, Arizona's zero tolerance laws automatically peg you with a DUI even if your BAC is .01 percent.

If you do find yourself with a DUI, however, don't panic. Hiring an attorney can greatly help with your charges because you will have someone knowledgeable and experienced with DUI cases by your side. You will get sound counsel about all your legal options and an attorney's negotiating power in court.

With the police now having active patrols on Sun Devil territory in Tempe, chances are higher that you can get caught driving under the influence this year. This collaborative patrol will be more active on weekends and whenever there are football games. It is important to be aware of this heightened patrol and to make the best choices you can to avoid this charge and to be safe on the road.

Though it is jarring to get charged with a DUI, this is a situation you can learn from. It is also important to know your rights and to get legal help as soon as possible. With the assistance of an attorney, you can have your highest chance of making sure that this one slip-up doesn't mess up your permanent record or future career prospects.
