Although the city of Sedona straddles two different counties, the Sedona Municipal Court has jurisdiction to hear any crime occurring within the city limits of Sedona.

Court Information

The Sedona Municipal Court is located at 221-A Brewer Road, Sedona, AZ 86336. The Court is open for business Monday – Thursday from 7:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. The Sedona City Prosecutor, who works for the Sedona City Attorney, prosecutes criminal cases in the Sedona Municipal Court.

The City Hall lot is listed as the parking location for visitors to the Sedona Municipal Court. However, because parking information can change, it is a good idea to allow extra time to find a parking space and walk to the courthouse.

Most criminal cases that are charged in the Sedona Municipal Court are the result of arrests made by the Sedona Police Department, although occasionally other departments make arrests that lead to cases in the Sedona Municipal Court.

About the Presiding Magistrate, Judge Richard Speer

Judge Richard Speer was appointed Presiding Magistrate Judge of the Sedona Municipal Court in October 2025, with his two-year term beginning January 5, 2026. Before joining the Sedona Municipal Court, Judge Speer served as the City Magistrate for Bullhead City, a position he held beginning in January 2023.

During his time as Bullhead City Magistrate, Judge Speer oversaw court operations, helped reduce case backlogs, and expanded specialized programs including Veterans Court and Quality of Life Court.

How Do I File Documents With the Sedona Municipal Court?

If you need to file a motion or other document with the Sedona Municipal Court, you may email, mail, or deliver the document in person to the Court. A copy must also be provided to the Prosecutor’s Office. Motions can be emailed to sedona@courts.az.gov, with copies to the Prosecutor’s Office at bkunisch@sedonaaz.gov and efimbrez@sedonaaz.gov.

Be sure to include your name, case or citation number, current mailing address, email address, telephone number, and detailed information about your request. The Prosecutor has 10 calendar days to respond before the Court can rule on the motion.

What Happens When I Go to Court?

Attending court at the Sedona Municipal Court generally goes as follows:

  • First, arrive at the Sedona Municipal Court at 221-A Brewer Road and allow yourself enough time to park and get to the courtroom.
  • Follow the court’s security procedures and court staff’s instructions when entering the building.
  • Dress appropriately. The court does not permit excessively revealing clothing, offensive slogans or pictures, and requires shoes. Hats and sunglasses must be removed before entering the courtroom.
  • Turn off your cell phone before entering the courtroom.
  • Sit quietly while court is in session. Court proceedings are recorded, and background noise can interfere with the recording.
  • Check in with court staff and follow their instructions regarding where to wait.
  • Make sure you appear at the date and time listed on your citation, summons, or court notice. Failure to appear can result in an additional misdemeanor charge and a warrant for your arrest.
  • At an arraignment, you will generally enter a plea of guilty, not guilty, or no contest. If you plead not guilty, the Court will schedule a pretrial conference.
  • At a pretrial conference, you or your attorney can review the facts and evidence in the case and discuss possible resolutions with the prosecutor. A case may be resolved through a plea agreement or deferred prosecution agreement, or you may request a trial.
  • Depending on the offense, your case may be decided by a jury or a judge in a bench trial.
