Sports stars arrested for DUI, other infractions in 2013

Posted on January 13, 2014 in DUI Charges

Scottsdale sports fans understand that one of the apparent pleasures of writing about sports is that at the end of each year, the writer gets the opportunity to look back and relive both the highlights and lowlights of the past 12 months.

One sportswriter recently went through the annual ritual, noting that in 2013, hundreds of sports figures had been arrested for DUI and other changes over the course of the year.

The writer quoted from a website devoted to tracking sports-related arrests, noting that last year, the most arrests in any sport were in NCCA football, with 174. That was followed by the NFL with 71 busts, former pro athletes being arrested 50 times, college basketball players at 49, NBA players at 19, major league baseball players with 19 and NHL playersbringing up the rear with just two arrests in all of last year.

You might recall that last month, it was widely reported that former Phoenix Suns star Tom Chambers was arrested for DUI in Scottsdale.

Chambers was pulled over after attending the Arizona State University Pac-12 championship game. Police said they found a couple of nearly empty beer bottles in his truck at the time.

And in the article we referenced earlier, the writer recalled the DUI arrest of Hall of Famer Charles Barkley, also in Scottsdale.

Barkley had once noted that he was not employed as a role model, but rather as a basketball player. “Parents should be role models,” he said. “Just because I can dunk a basketball, that doesn’t mean I should raise your kids.”

Many parents would agree with that assessment of a hoopster’s role in society and a parent’s role.

In fact, many parents are distraught when learning their child has been arrested for allegedly driving while drunk. They understand that their own knowledge of the law is limited, so they enlist the aid of an attorney experienced in protecting defendants’ rights and freedoms.
