How is the one-leg stand assessed?

Every year in Arizona, countless drivers get pulled over on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol. If this happens to you, the likelihood is that you will be asked to submit to a breath test. You may also be required to participate in a number of field sobriety tests designed to measure your possible impairment.

One of these tests is known as the one-leg stand. Officers will ask you to stand on one leg, with your other foot held approximately 6 inches up. You will then be required to spend 30 seconds in that position, counting. Signs that are deemed to indicate potential impairment include putting down your foot, swaying, hopping, or helping yourself to balance with your arms.

Of course, some people are simply bad at balancing, but this does not necessarily mean you should refuse the test for fear of failing. In fact, refusal to submit to certain tests during a DUI investigation can even cost you your driver’s license. Fortunately, there are multiple elements to a field sobriety test, so even if one is challenging, your performance on the others will also be taken into account.
