Shoplifting is a serious theft crime, and involves the elements of removing items from a store without paying, altering price tags to pay less, concealing items or moving items from their original container to pay less. When these items are valued at less than $1,000 you could be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor and face up to six months in jail. If they are valued at $1,000 to $2,000 you could be charged with a Class 6 felony and face up to one year in prison, and if they are valued at more than $2,000 then you will be charged with a Class 5 felony and you could face up to 1.5 years in prison if you are convicted of this crime.
