Police have plenty of tools to find drunk drivers

Posted on May 23, 2016 in DUI Arrest

The Phoenix area offers plenty to do, from sporting events to concerts and theater. And sometimes, people enjoy alcohol at these events. But what happens if you’re pulled over after drinking and driving? What if you face a charge of drunk driving?

No one is arguing that it’s right to drink and drive. But even if you’re charged with DUI, you do have the right to legal representation. And you should absolutely exercise it. An attorney can help you work through a charge of drunk driving.

Police officers throughout the metropolitan Phoenix area have several resources at their disposal to catch drivers who are driving under the influence. The Metro Phoenix Highway Patrol Bureau of the Arizona Department of Public Safety is a good example: The department’s Metro DUIEnforcement Unit was created specifically to detect, investigate and arrest drivers who are impaired by alcohol or drugs.

According to the Department of Public Safety’s Web site, the DUI Enforcement Unit includes one sergeant, six officers and one civilian employee. The unit not only focuses on arresting drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and drugs, it also works with other area highway patrol officers to expedite DUI investigations.

One of the more effective tools used by the Arizona Department of Public Safety to find motorists who might be guilty of drunk driving? Sobriety checkpoints, which are used by police officers throughout Arizona. These are locations where officers stop traffic to check drivers for signs of intoxication.

Once police officers do stop you under the suspicion of DUI, they can use several types of forensic evidence. This includes field sobriety testing, forensic blood testing, urine testing and breathalyzer testing.

The message here? Phoenix-area police have several tools at their disposal to find and charge motorists with DUI. If you have been stopped and charged with this crime, be sure to seek out legal help. If you are charged with drunk driving, you’ll face steep fines and the possible loss of your driving privileges. An attorney, though, can help protect yourrights when you face a drunk driving charge.
