MVD Points and Driver Improvement Schools

In Arizona, your driving record and any citations may affect your ability to maintain a license and drive without restriction. Moving violations in a car have associated points depending on the severity of the offense. Any DUI related conviction carries eight points and if you accumulate thirteen or morepoints within a twelve month period of time, your license will be suspended. Other offenses, such as speeding, carry two or three points and you may be eligible for Defensive Driving School to clear your record.

There is often confusion about the two “schools” that are associated with the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). Defensive Driving School (DDS) is a voluntary program to remove the points from your record and it is allowable once every two years. DDS is a four hour class that can be completed online or at a MVD facility. Traffic Survival School (TSS)is typically triggered once you receive 8 or more points and is mandatory to complete. Failure to do so could result in further license suspension. Completing TSS will not remove the points and is targeted at individuals who have committed numerous smaller violations or one major violation, such as a DUI and need corrective action in their driving behaviorand attitude.
